An audit of 97 intrahospital transports of critically ill patients was undertaken within Westmead Hospital. The aims of this audit were to assess all factors that may lead to problems during intrahospital transports. There are many potential risks associated with transporting the critically ill patient, including their greater susceptibility to the physiological changes associated with the change in environment, changes in equipment such as ventilators and pumps, downgrading the intensity of care, the absence of backup supplies and staff and failure to identify or predict continued deterioration in the patient’s condition. In this study, we found that although intrahospital transport could be performed with adequate safety by means of either manual or mechanical ventilation, the use of a transport ventilator with a patient-triggering function was able to provide more consistent ventilation.
